In the warm months of 2025 I started sewing bags for myself. I was becoming obsessed with biking, and in parallel, with sewing. Two years earlier I sold my car and started using my bike for commuting, getting groceries, picnic rides, and bikepacking. All of these activities required me to carry something on my bike. I had the new wheels, I just needed the storage.
I wanted some bike bags that were: durable with specific functions, versatile on and off the bike, and looked cool. I also wanted my job to be designing and sewing things.
In the winter of 2026, I started taking orders, made a bunch of spreadsheets, and launched Lunch Brake Bike Bags; ride companions that can carry all your cool and important stuff, on and off the bike.
I design these bags to hold up to wear, have functional and intentional details, and look really good - all of this to combat planned obsolescence. These are not a disposable bags, they are designed to last and be repaired you should enjoy looking at them for all of that time.
Everything I make is designed and constructed here in Burlington, Vermont. Right now, I make everything on a custom basis or in small batches to allow my process to be nimble and respond to change without wasting excessive product or material.
Lunch Brake is a company that makes and sells bike bags, but it is about a lot more than that.
There are so many possible beginnings to this story, but I think a lot of it starts here in May 2023 when I got my first new bike. It's a build from my friend, a bike shop owner, designed for all the kinds of biking I wanted to do (commuting, pavement rides, trail rides, and overnight trips). This bike and I have gone almost everywhere together, including other countries and dark parts of the mind.
Riding this bike unlocked something for me that changed my way of life. On the bike, I learned how to fail, how to trust myself, how to be more generous and more patient. Biking is always teaching me how to be brave. I sold my car and started using my bike for everything. I joined group rides, met new friends, commuted to work, carried groceries, picked up furniture from the side of the road, and went camping all on the bike. In a culture designed around the car, this is definitely a tough choice, and also a privilege that it was a choice for me and not a necessity.
Biking has shown me the beauty of a simple machine, and that prioritizing convenience can come with hidden costs. Sometimes it is better to go slow because it is more magical and beautiful and less harmful. I love sewing for similar reasons. The sewing machine I use the most is from the 1950s and it still works because it was made to last and be repaired.
These are principles of biking and sewing that influence my bags. I'm making these bags to be beautiful, functional tools. I want people to want to use them and to want to go ride their bikes. They can be taken apart, reused, repaired. I use these bags for every kind of trip that I do on my bike when I need to carry stuff; year-round, no matter the distance, and for when I get off the bike but need to bring my stuff with me.
I see the bike as a key and a tool; to carry us where we need to go, to connect us on our way, to bring us joy and humility, to help us withdraw from car and fossil fuel dependence, and to start towards building more human-centric living. Bikes are tough and fun and versatile! I believe our bike bags should be the same. They should be able to support our weird fun adventures like camping with your friends in the woods AND help our bikes serve as a car replacement when we are running errands.
I feel very grateful for all the support so far, and can't wait to make more bags for more people :)
